Mt. Olive Child Development Center is Open for 2012 - 2013 Registration

Mt. Olive Child Development Center is open for registration for the new school year 2012 - 2013. Mt. Olive offers classes for children ages 9 months through 5 years of age. Membership is open to members and non-members. If you are a member, ask about tuition discounts. Members will have first priority before open enrollment so please inquire early. Registration packets are available from the CDC by contacting the Mt. Olive office or Shirly Griggs, Mt. Olive CDC Director at 828-324-0120 or mtolivecdc@embarqmail.com.

Hunger Awareness Walk - sponsored by Micah's Cupboard

Mt. Olive Lutheran Church's Micah's Cupbard is sponsoring a hunger awareness walk around Mt. Olive Lutheran's walking track on April 15. The walk will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to come walk, pray and reflect about hunger needs in our area. Everyone who comes is asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the cupboard. Water and fellowship wil be plentiful. If you are unable to walk, please feel free to join us. Bring a lawn chair or grab one of the many benches around the track to support our walkers and the mission.

Micah's Cupboard strives to assist the needs of local school children and their families during school breaks and vacations, plus other immediate needs identified by the church. An Old Fashioned Pounding for Sipes Orchard Home Transitional Living Center

Show your love in April by sharing a pound of goodness with the residents of Sipes Orchard Home’s Houston Transitional Living Center. The Houston Transitional Living Center is a residential, co-ed program for homeless youth, ages 16-21. The program is designed for those youth who find themselves homeless and do not have the financial, academic, emotional, or behavioral skills necessary for independent living. Just like any home, Houston TLC has many consumable items that need to be replenished frequently. Bring your pounding items to Mt. Olive any time during the month of April. The Christian women of Malaysia invite us to join them Friday, March 2, for World Day of Prayer 2012. The theme “Let Justice Prevail” was developed out of their experience of life as Christian women within their multi-cultural, multi-religious society.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Jeremy Fisher J. Nursery Provided. Refreshments following the service.

Jeremy grew up in Malaysia and is leading Mt. Olive’s Malaysia Ministry Team.

Saturday, March 3: Serving at Mt. Olive!

Anyone who is available to help decorate the Marketplace for Hometown Nazareth is invited to meet in Mt. Olive’s Fellowship Hall this Saturday, beginning at 9:00 am and working until the Marketplace is completed. Any help that you can provide will be appreciated. If you have any baskets, plants, pottery, cloth or an ez-up tent (like the vendor tents) that you would be willing to provide for decorations or set up, please bring them on Saturday, labeled with your name. If you have signed up to help, we will be contacting you this week with more details. Thank you for all the support we have received so far! Contact Sue Seabock or Eric Griggs.

Thought for the week: (Considering Mark 8:31-38)

Peter could not believe what he was hearing. A messiah who would suffer?, who would be killed? That was not the kind of messiah he – or any of the disciples – was expecting.

Who do we say Jesus is? What kind of Jesus are we most eager to claim for ourselves? Do we most often envision a glorified, heavenly Christ reigning from the right hand of God? Is our Jesus the captain of a winning team, leading present-day disciples to victory and a trouble-free life? Do we raise Jesus so high on some celestial pedestal that it is almost impossible to imagine him down in the muck of our everyday lives?

Peter and the disciples didn’t want a suffering messiah. Do we?

If the one whom we follow knew suffering, what does that mean for our lives? Jesus makes no secret of the reality that discipleship comes with a cost that may involve pain, heartache, inconvenience, self-emptying: all those things that the world tries so desperately to avoid or deny.

Given the choice, wouldn’t we prefer a savior who didn’t ask us to die? Like Peter, we allow earthly concerns to shape our response to the One who went resolutely to the cross. We worry that following the one who asks us to lose our lives for the sake of the gospel will make us appear odd or even ridiculous in the eyes of the world. We would rather keep Jesus high on that glorious pedestal where we can admire him from time to time, but where he can do little to upset our carefully ordered lives.

When we balk at what it means to follow Jesus, God graciously breathes the gift of the Holy Spirit into us. Spirit-led, our naming of Jesus as the Christ becomes a bold confession of faith that sets us on the path to the cross – and to life.

Mt. Olive Lutheran Child Development Center Enrollment Begins

Mt. Olive Lutheran Child Development Center will begin its 17th year of Preschool classes this August 2012. Registration for the new school year 2012-2013 will begin on Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Mt. Olive Child Development provides classes for children ages 9 months through 5 years. Members of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church ELCA receive discounted tuition rates and first priority. Currently enrolled students also reserve the right for first priority along with enrolling members.

Mt. Olive Child Development Center provides Christ-centered developmentally appropriate learning environments for all chidren. Children are encouraged experience the joy of learning, establish independence and develop a sense of security and responsiblity.
